Every once in a while you gotta spread your wings and fly, to Hawaii that is. On a recent trip to Maui, we got the opportunity to check out a new restaurant, MonkeyPod. Located in pricey Wailea, Monkeypod is another excellent spin-off from Merriman.
When we arrived it was only the second day that they were open, so we expected a few hiccups. The dining room is located on the second floor of a rather non-de-script strip mall. The interior was hip and fresh, a place where you could still wear your flip-flops and not feel out of place. The highly touted bar spanned and entire wall, offering 36 draft beers all served at 29 degrees, there was a highly visible thermometer to keep it in check. We each ordered a Deschutes ‘Hop Hengel’ while the RoShamLadies ordered a Deschutes ‘Inversion IPA’ and a Affligem Blonde to get things started. The manager was nice enough to pick up our first round, thanks JD, it’s good to know people in Maui.
For an appetizer, we ordered the Wood-Roasted Chicken Wings (Wood-Roasted Naturally Raised Chicken with Garlic, Chili, & Rosemary, Blue Cheese Fondue). Wow! The blue cheese fondue was amazing, I could have dipped my flip-flop in this and it would have tasted good. On to the burger…
Pete’s Classic Maui Cattle Company Burger; Sautéed Onion, Fontina, Vine-Ripened Tomato, Lettuce, House-Made Pickles, Handcrafted Bun. This burger had really good flavor, the beef was obviously really good, as was all the produce atop, and the fontina cheese added a nice sharp twing. Once again though, over cooked, but probably because it was only their second day open. They didn’t offer any sort of sauce on the burger, but I improvised using their ginger ketchup (great combo) and the aioli mustard. This added the necessary moisture I was craving. Not sure I would order it again, not because it wasn’t good, but because their menu has a lot of other things that looked really good.
Next time your in Maui, check this place out! MonkeyPod Kitchen
